HOUSING IS A HUMAN RIGHT

For photos of this event, visit our Flickr pageIn July, activists of the Global Platform for the Right to the City (GPR2C) will be visiting the United States to speak with housing rights groups and community-based organizations to discuss shared strategies on framing local and global responses to the crisis of affordable housing. With increased privatization and financialization leading to gentrification and displacement, the housing crisis creates local challenges with global consequences. How do we frame housing as a human right? How do activists think about the local and global in real time, and develop networks of solidarity? What do alternatives look like, and how do we grow them on scale?

On July 14, the delegation will visit East Harlem and show solidarity with New York City Housing Authority residents, who have been struggling for restoration of funding for public housing. In the afternoon, we will visit the South Bronx, and historic Brook Park, a community space built as a response of the community to environmental racism and displacement. There, the delegation will meet community organizations dealing with sustainable development, resiliency, alternative economics, and the fight against gentrification and displacement.

Schedule for Saturday, July 14, 2018

10:00-11:00: East Harlem Housing Rally

12:00-12:35: Introduction: Framing the Local and the International: Lorena Zarate (President, Habitat International Coalition), Rob Robinson (International Alliance of Inhabitants), representative from Picture the Homeless (PTH)

12:45-1:45 PM: Responses to Displacement and Gentrification: Street Vendors Project, Tom Angotti (Hunter College), rep from Community Action for Safe Apartments (CASA)

2:00-3:00: Alternative Visions, Resiliency: representatives from South Bronx Unite and Green Workers Cooperative (invited), as well as international guests

3:00-4:00 PM Community Dinner
