JUSTICE FOR GENOCIDE
Thursday, May 30, 7pm - RLS−NYC
Join us for an evening with Benjamín Jerónimo, president of the Guatemalan Association for Justice and Reconciliation (AJR) and key witness in the genocide trial against former dictator Efraín Ríos Montt.
The Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala (NISGUA) has organized an evening with Jerónimo to discuss the importance of Ríos Montt’s conviction and recent developments in the case, and we’ll be hosting at the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung—New York Office: 275 Madison Avenue, entrance over 40th St., Suite 2114 (21st floor).
Hear directly from the AJR about their experience fighting for justice in the 30 years since genocide occurred, for the 12 years it has taken the case to reach a Guatemalan court and the 27 days spent in the genocide trial courtroom. We will take a moment to celebrate the victory won by the survivors, including the almost 100 witnesses who bravely gave their testimony during the trial. We will share the feeling in the courtroom after Ríos Montt was sentenced to 80 years in prison, when human rights activists, leaders of movements in defense of indigenous peoples territories and other Guatemalans broke out into songs of struggle and resistance. It is in this spirit we gather to celebrate this historic achievement.
We will also hear the AJR’s reflections on the recent Constitutional Court ruling overturning the sentence, a troubling example of the impunity that continues to prevail in Guatemala, and the long road that still lies ahead. You can read the AJR’s response to the ruling, presented to the UN Indigenous People’s Forum this morning.
