For the second straight year, the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung—New York Office will co-host this Trinational Exchange with the UCLA Downtown Labor Center and the Institute for Transnational Social Change.

Last year’s roundtable focused on the state of labor 20 years after NAFTA. You can download the report by journalist David Bacon in English and Spanish.

This year’s gathering brings together representatives from progressive unions and labor groups in key sectors of the North American economy—from autoparts to energy, from green industries to mining and steel, and from agriculture to cross-border organizing. We will learn about the challenges of organizing in different sectors and regions, with the goal to draw out common lessons and plan future collaborations and solidarity actions among unions in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

“Solidarity from the Ground Up” will include two visits to learn about organizing campaigns in the Los Angeles area. The first visit will be to UFCW-Local 770’s “El Super” Campaign, while the second will take us to the Carwasher Worker Center to learn about their CLEAN Carwash Campaign. What can we learn from these campaigns? How can we support their struggles and provide them a space to express solidarity with workers organizing in different regions or sectors?

As part of our visit to the Carwasher Worker Center we will hold a public community forum and dinner on Friday, December 5, from 7:15-9:30pm. Please join us at 516 W. Vernon Avenue to share a meal and talk with leading Mexican labor officials about “Mexico at the Crossroads: Labor Reforms and the Future of Workers.”

This event is a collaboration between the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung—New York Office, the UCLA Downtown Labor Center, and the Institute for Transnational Social Change.
