THE LOW WAGE WORKERS’ FIGHT IS WORLDWIDE!
A discussion with representatives from the Mexican Frente Auténtico del Trabajo - June 26, 6pm - NYC
From Tuesday, June 24, through Thursday, June 26, the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung—New York Office, in collaboration with the Left Labor Project, will host two representatives from the Frente Auténtico del Trabajo (FA), culminating in a public event on Thursday night at the Murphy Institute.
Thursday night’s event, which will begin with a reception at 6pm, represents a unique opportunity to hear about the work being done by Mexico’s most innovative left-wing labor union. Mexican workers stand at the forefront of the fight for decent pay and against ‘free trade’ austerity. Don’t miss this chance to share their experiences and put our own campaigns in an international perspective!
The Authentic Workers’ Front (or FAT: Frente Auténtico del Trabajo) is an independent federation of labor unions, worker-owned cooperatives, and farmworker and community organizations founded in 1960. FAT represents workers in manufacturing, as well as transportation and the public sector, in more than half the states in Mexico. It is well known for promoting democracy in unions across the country, as well as for leading struggles against the Mexican government’s harsh austerity policies. Internationally, FAT plays a leading role in building solidarity amongst left-wing unions, particularly in struggles against free trade and NAFTA. Between June 24 and 26, FAT will be represented in New York by two of its members.
Imelda Tovar Morales is a member of the Protecto Deco syndicate, affiliated with the Frente Autentico del Trabajo and located in the state of Nuevo León in Northeastern Mexico. She also serves on the Executive Committee in FAT’s Secretariat of Gender Equality.
Benedicto Martínez is FAT’s former National Coordinator as well as National Commission official. He currently presides as Vice President of Mexico’s National Union of Workers and General Secretary of the National Metalmecánica Union.
With support from the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung—New York Office and the Left Labor Project, Imelda and Benedicto will take part in a series of meetings with leadership from unions, community organizations supporting low-wage labor initiatives, and rank-and-file workers engaged in struggles to improve their working conditions. Through this series of North-South dialogues, RLS–NYC and LLP hope to support the building of new relationships, shared tactics and strategies, and increased solidarity surrounding our shared struggles against austerity and low-wage exploitation.
